What do I have to do to maintain my EMT certification?

EMTs are required to complete a minimum of 48 CEUs every 3 years to maintain their New Jersey EMT-B Certification. These CEUs must consist of 24 Elective CEUs as well as 24 Core CEUs (Refresher class). The NJ Department of Health Office of EMS must approve these classes.

The Instructor will have you fill out a scan sheet. Your CEUs are tracked by OEMS by these scan sheets – be sure to fill out all information accurately!

My EMT-B certification expired. What do I have to do to get it back?

If your EMT-B certification is expired for less than 2 years:

You can become eligible to sit for NJ EMT-B certification after completing an approved 24 hour EMT-B Refresher course (also known as Core 13). You do not have to attend the EMT Basic class. You may register for the certification exam through MONOC after completing the Refresher Program. You must successfully complete the certification exam within this 2 year window.

If your EMT-B certification is expired for more than 2 years:

You are required to complete the entire 120 hour EMT Basic program to regain your New Jersey EMT-B Certification. There is no credit given for any prior EMT certification.

You must also present a current CPR card to be eligible to sit for NJ EMT-B certification. You must have the original card. The state representative sent to Give the exam is not able to accept copies or letters in place of the original card.

Who will pay for the cost of my EMT Training if I am a volunteer?

If you are a member of a local volunteer First Aid Squad then there is no cost to you for EMT Basic training and all subsequent CEU Programs. Check with the officers of your First Aid Squad to see if your organization is eligible.

MONOC provides EMT Basic and CEU training to eligible volunteer EMTs through the NJ EMT Training Fund.

STUDENTS MUST SUBMIT A SIGNED EMT TRAINING FUND CERTIFICATE OF ELIGIBILITY FORM PRIOR TO OR AT THE START OF CLASS. You can go to the button on the MONOC Education Web Page to download this form.

Students not eligible for or not submitting a signed Certificate of Eligibility may pay for classes by purchase order, credit card, money order, or cash.

How do I know how many CEUs I have?

OEMS tracks the number of CEUs that you have earned. It will take 30 to 60 days after a course is held for it to appear on your CEU Status record. You can go to the button on the MONOC Education Web Page to request a current CEU Status Letter from OEMS. If you find you are missing any CEU credits from your record please contact MONOC Education to help you resolve the problem.

Can we hold these CEU classes at our squad building?

YES! Most classes are available to be taught by a MONOC Instructor in your squad building. MONOC will open these programs to other EMTs through posting the program on the MONOC Education Web Site. A minimum number of EMTs are required to hold the class.

Emergency Medical Service Organizations are encouraged to develop an Annual Educational Calendar that will meet the needs of their organizations. MONOC will work together with you to develop a customized educational plan.

I am an RN. Is there a bridge program available?

RNs may become eligible to sit for NJ EMT-B certification after completing an approved 24 hour EMT-B Refresher course (also known as Core 13). You do not have to attend the EMT Basic class. You may register for the certification exam through MONOC after completing the Refresher Program.

RNs are required to complete a minimum of 48 CEUs every 3 years to maintain their New Jersey EMT-B Certification. What is a Paramedic?

Paramedics are prehospital emergency healthcare providers that supplement the first aid squad’s basic life support capabilities with the inclusion of advanced life support therapies.  In short, they bring the emergency room to you, wherever you may be.  The concept of MICU is to identify and treat critically ill or injured prior to transportation to definitive care.  After utilizing Standing Orders paramedics use sophisticated radio systems at the scene paramedics can communicate to the emergency department base physician a complete patient history, physical and send a 12 lead EKG for physician’s interpretation and ultimate treatment.

Mobile Intensive Care Paramedics provide the following advanced life support therapies:

  • Endotracheal Intubation
